Railings with a History

One of the items in the Winter Photography Scavenger Hunt is Alternative C Metal Railings. This brought to mind a fence on the farm. Anyone who knows a farmer will tell you that nothing is wasted. A place is found for everything. This applies to the railings in our yard.

You wouldn't be wrong if you thought that they resemble railway lines and if you are wondering what the blue rope is its to stop a rather enthusiastic horse jumping over the top! I have mentioned before the disused quarry next to us. When it was in full use a small railway was used to pull the slag up the hill to dispose of it. A stationary steam engine was used to pull the trucks up. There are just a few little clues to this past activity.

A store of water for the engine now a habitat for newts and other water life.

Other discarded items that the farm seems to have no use for but give clues to a past industry.

Including a few unused rails!

Apparently Brian's father put up these rails decades ago and they still serve their purpose today. Who says recycling is new?
